Kefalonia

Lying opposite the mouth of the Gulf of Corinth and just sixty miles south of Paxos, Kefalonia is ringed with countless bays and inlets. There are beaches of spectacular white coral, while on the south coast the beaches are of fine golden sand that shelve gently under an aquamarine sea, making them perfect for children.

Elsewhere, subterranean lakes, stalactite-encrusted caverns and marine turtles wait to be discovered.

Thanks to a good road network, the island lends itself to easy exploration. Venetian fortresses and Byzantine churches, underground Mycenean tombs dating from 1200BC, a ruined Roman villa with dazzling mosaics, precipitous mountain communities, a host of small fishing villages and the unique Kefalonia Firs jostle for attention.

Towering above at 1627m, Mount Aenos looks down upon a luxurious landscape of pine, olive, cypress, orange, lemon and grape, imbued with the heady scent of wild lavender.
